The Challenges

The Challenges You Face

About half of U.S. adults get at least some of their news from social media, while local newsrooms keep shrinking. Voters have more ways than ever to tune you out, and your opponents have more ways to define you first. Earning attention and keeping trust takes a plan.

A Calendar That Never Stops

Connecticut elects state offices in even years and municipal offices in odd years, with conventions in May, state primaries in August and municipal primaries in September. Early voting now opens about two weeks before a general election, so your closing message has to land sooner.

Rules on Every Ad, Mailer and Text

Connecticut requires "paid for by" and "approved by" attributions on campaign mail, websites, emails, texts and social posts, with added rules for TV, radio and online video. Those rules changed in 2025, and federal races follow separate FEC rules.

Attacks, Rumors and Rapid Response

An opponent's mailer, an out-of-context clip or a false post can define you before you answer. Meta has blocked new political ads in the final week of recent national U.S. elections, so a late response has to be planned in advance, not improvised.

AI, Deepfakes and Doctored Video

Connecticut lawmakers have debated limits on deceptive AI election content without passing one, and federal regulators fined an AI-voice robocall scheme $6 million in 2024. Google and Meta require disclosure when election ads use realistic synthetic content.

Getting Covered as Newsrooms Shrink

Newspapers have lost more than three-quarters of their jobs since 2005, so fewer reporters cover more races, and many local races get little coverage at all. Earned media now means making your news easy to cover and being ready on camera.

From Campaign to Office

Winning changes the rules. Legislative mailings stop after July 16 in state election years, state law limits publicly funded promotion of incumbents, and blocking critics on an account used for official business can raise First Amendment issues. Constituents expect answers, not slogans.

In Practice

Example: How We'd Handle a Misleading Video in the Final Week

Example Scenario This is an illustration of our approach to a common situation, not a client case study, testimonial or legal advice.

Eight days before Election Day, with early voting under way, a short video of a candidate starts spreading online. It has been edited to change what was said, or it may be AI-generated. Here's how we'd help a campaign respond quickly, truthfully and within the rules.

Before

Prepare before it happens.

Early in the race, we research the candidate's own record, archive full-length video of speeches, debates and interviews, and set up a rapid response plan: who decides, who speaks and who checks with the treasurer and counsel. We also make sure the campaign's ad accounts are verified on each platform, since verification can take days.

During

Verify before you react.

We compare the clip with the original footage and document exactly what was changed: edited, taken out of context or synthetic. We save copies, links and timestamps, and we don't repost the fake, which only spreads it further.

Answer with the full record.

The campaign posts the full, unedited video with a short, factual statement and the required attribution, then shares it with supporters and volunteers so they spread the facts, not the fake.

Brief reporters and prepare the candidate.

Reporters get the original footage and a clear timeline. We prepare the candidate for interviews with one calm, consistent answer and a pivot back to the campaign's closing message.

Report it and correct the record.

We help the campaign report the content under each platform's policies on manipulated media, while counsel decides on any legal or regulatory steps. Any paid response carries the required attributions and follows each platform's political ad rules, including Meta's final-week freeze on new ads when it applies.

After

Close strong.

Through Election Day, the campaign keeps its focus on voters: early voting and Election Day reminders and the candidate's own closing message, not the fake.

Review and improve.

After the election, an honest review of what worked, updated response templates and a documented record the campaign or its counsel can use if they choose to file a complaint.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Who do you work with?

We work with candidates and officeholders of every party. That includes candidates for municipal, legislative, statewide and congressional office, campaign managers and teams, elected officials and their offices, legislative caucuses, PACs and ballot question committees. To avoid conflicts and coordination problems, we work with only one candidate in a race, and never for both a candidate and an outside group in the same race.

Do you handle "paid for by" disclaimers and other election rules?

We build Connecticut's "paid for by" and "approved by" attributions, FEC disclaimers for federal races and each platform's political ad requirements into everything we create, and we flag questions early. Your treasurer and counsel make the final compliance decisions. We don't give legal advice.

How quickly can you respond to an attack or breaking story?

We offer 24/7 on-call support, so you reach our team directly and we can help with your first response right away. The best response starts before the attack, so we also help you research your own record, prepare responses and set an approval process.

How do you work with campaigns and offices, and what does it cost?

Every race and office is different, so we offer monthly retainers or single projects, such as a debate prep session, a launch video or a rapid response plan. For campaigns in the Citizens' Election Program, we provide detailed invoices that document our work for the program's records. A free consultation is the best way to scope what you need.
